  • Per Noa's announcement, the original Elona forum and in-game chat (chat messages, wish messages, and death messages from other players) are scheduled to be decommissioned at the end of the month. (I don't know if this will impact user maps / moongates / pet arena.)

Some of you may recall that I worked on a project called EloBridge in the past; part of the effort was reverse-engineering the chat protocol specification (carried over HTTP) and part of it was asking Noa. As part of making EloBridge easier to use, I had asked Noa to provide a configuration option to override the default chat server. With the announcement of the chat server's closure, perhaps it's time to revisit this feature.

To specify a custom chat server (that handles network player character chat messages, wish messages, and death messages), edit your config.txt and set the serverList entry to 1:

    Default config.txt:

       serverList. "0" 0=auto retrieve 1=disable auto retrieve

To enable a custom chat server, change config.txt:

       serverList. "1" 0=auto retrieve 1=disable auto retrieve

Then, edit or create server.txt; its default contents are:

       noaneko.squares.net%elona.squares.net%

which is retrieved from this URL.

The chat server is noaneko.squares.net, so if you have an alternate chat server running (e.g. EloBridge), you can change server.txt to this:

       localhost%elona.squares.net%

I'll see if I can find the time to run a public alternate chat server if there's sufficient interest. Updates will be posted here.

    • Much as I liked the old chat, I didn't care for having to close it through Task Manager.

    • A shame. I feel the game will lose a lot from the lack of a standard chat server. The occational death message and subsiquent complaint were a warm little reminder that you weren't failing alone.

    • You can actually view chat in-game, too -- you can write to it with the "Tab" default hot key, and I think you can view messages in-game from the same dialog box (two tabs over) as your journal (default hotkey of "j").

    • I'm aware though I prefer using the web interface.

If there's enough interest, and if Noa's other web server still remains, perhaps we can still have a standard chat server.

    • I'd suggest if a seperate chat server does get set up it should probably be set as the default chat server on anna's version... Though perhaps whoever is makeing E+ might also be planning to set up a chat server.

        Loading editor
    • I'm planing on having the new chat server set as the default for everyone, just as it is today -- Elona+, Elona+ Custom, the original Elona, as well as any other variations (ELM, etc.).

    • Worry you not, voting was broken long before servers gone down, it was only showing static list of nicknames, but was failing to really accept new ones. This elona feature was using VOTECOM system, still available at http://www.cj-c.com/cgi_s/votec.htm

While moongate rooms and pet arenas rely upon list hosted on http://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/userfile/cliplog.txt

When you enter moongate or pet arena, elona downloads one of .eum, .pum, .pet, .ept files from http://homepage3.nifty.com/rfish/userfile/ to \user directory in your elona folder and gives them name "temp" with appropriate extension.

    • So... I'm back (kind-of), and found a little time to kick the tires on the forum. Turns out, MySQL does some really stupid things when backing up and restoring data. The software is working, but there's data corruption (due to mismatched character encodings) on the forum right now. I think that it can be fixed, though -- I'll update on here when everything is restored.

    • Glad I could help. And thanks! I'll need to ask Noa where he stuffed that bit of magic code for the link munging. I think he did that for spam prevention measures, since it is an open, no-registration website.

Also, the email system should be working again -- at least, I think it should be working. The email will come from a different address than before, but it should all work.

I heard that the voting (and maybe chat?) were removed from E+... not sure if that's just a rumor or if it's true. If someone could reach out to let the Japanese community know, I do have plans on reinstating both servers -- I just haven't gotten to it yet.

About the voting, I am not sure. In 1.55 update, the voting box suddenly usable when there was a werewolf attack in midnight. The voting box become a voting system about which NPC should be killed, which is suspected as werewolf. At certain clock, that certain NPC will be killed instantly.

The only time I've attempted to contact Ano I didn't receive a response, and I've never been able to post on Shitaraba even through a proxy. Perhaps Trantez could try?

Based on that argument, perhaps all the English content in Elona+ should be removed, as much of it "[doesn't] work" (not translated).

      1. I don't see any relation and;

      2. It's already done. English version is severly lacking in content compared to Japanese. Flavor text, item descriptions, books, cards, dialogues (*just* replaced by placeholders).

Also, for the people mentioning most English content being blank or placeholders, please look up Elona Custom on this wiki, AnnaBannana has been working real hard to translate everything and adding all the missing stuff like story cutscenes, item descriptions, and more.

I think I might be able to get the voting up fairly easily, but it sounds like folks are more interested in the in-game chat services. The latter appears to be more difficult -- I can't seem to find the WebTalk package from kent-web.com, which is what Noa originally used. I did reverse-engineer it a while back for the EloBridge project, though, so I could probably make a compatible server.

        Loading editor
    • Yeah, it seems like the wtalk package is no longer being served by them. The best I could find is this, which appears to be the first iteration, but I think Noa used version 2 (not sure, but the file was called wtalk2.cgi at least).

I also found this, but I'm not that sure it would be of much use.

Sadly I couldn't really find anything else that could be useful and the original page that hosted the files is no longer available (this).

    • Hey y'all.

It's been a while since I updated this thread. Some unexpected and unpleasant stuff happened in my professional life, which bled into my personal life.

I do have an update here, however. The new chat server is online right now... but it can't be used as-is by Elona (or Elona+). The correct solution would be to fix the code in Elona (or Elona+), but a more compatible solution (I know a lot of folks play older versions) would be to run a proxy that rewrites Elona(+)'s HTTP requests.

Here are the options on the table currently available for getting the chat server running:

      Option Advantages Disadvantages
      Fix the Elona source code
      • It's a relatively easy fix.
      • It's free!
      • It's the right thing to do.
      • Not compatible with older Elona(+) versions predating the fix.
      • Only Elona+ has this possibility; Elona will not.
      • Dependent on Ano to deliver the solution.
Write code to generate server.txt and use ngrok's Free service
      • It's free!
      • It's compatible with other Elona(+) versions.
      • Long development lead time.
      • Somewhat brittle solution.
Pay for a rewriting proxy with a stable address (like ngrok's Basic plan)
      • It's compatible with all Elona(+) versions.
      • Very fast turn-around time.
      • It costs money (recurring $5/month).
Run a re-writing proxy server on IBM Bluemix Containers.
      • It's compatible with all Elona(+) versions.
      • It's free (I think...)!
      • Have to learn IBM Bluemix Containers variation of Docker.

For the technically inclined, the details are below.

Elona uses HTTP to communicate with the chat server. I'm running the chat server on OpenShift. Elona makes the request using HTTP 1.0 and fills the Host header with "???" or "www.nifty.com???", and provides an absolute URI on the request line. The HTTP specification indicates that absolute URIs should only be used on an HTTP proxy. OpenShift relativizes the aboslute URI that's given and sends an HTTP Location header, using the host given by the Host header in the request.

This means that Elona issues a request like:

         > GET http://noaneko-elona.rhcloud.com/logen.txt HTTP/1.0
         > Host: ???

      And OpenShift responds with:

         < 301 Moved Permanently
         < Location: http://???/logen.txt

Obviously, that doesn't work. Not only has Elona given incorrect data to OpenShift in its HTTP request, it's also not able to understand the redirection using HTTP 301 and Location.

Ngrok provides a potential solution to this problem by inspecting the request and rewriting it as follows:

         > GET /logen.txt HTTP/1.0

However, with the free plan, ngrok does not allow one to set the hostname that Elona must use in order to pass traffic through ngrok. This means that server.txt must be generated dynamically, and the hostname will by dynamically generated by ngrok's server. To enable permanent, persistent names, ngrok requires a paid subscription.

I'm open to other ideas, but please, understand the technical problem before offering a solution. Also, I want this to run as long as possible without intervention -- so I'd prefer a solution that requires no funding, and I'd prefer solutions that don't involve potentially unstable personal servers.

    • Also, I will try to fix that problem with phpBB. I am aware, but I have yet to find the time to fix it.

    • At $5/month, it wouldn't be very hard to fund it for the next few years with donations.

        Loading editor
    • If we do go down the route of paying $5 a month to use ngrok's basic plan, simply set up a Paypal account and we dedicated fans will definately donate enough money to it to keep it running for years to come easily. I know I will donate to it if we go down that path : ).

        Loading editor
    • Hell, I'd pay for the $5 a month all by myself if it comes down to it.

So realistically, I want to avoid doing $5/month myself because there are lots of unpleasant tax implications that I'd rather not have to deal with (it ends up being something stupid, like ~$8-9/month, just to pass through my hands, instead of through the hands of a dedicated company...).

185.82.99.2 wrote: So does this basic hosting plan imply that you have to subscribe for not less than a year or more?

That is correct. Alan (ngrok's owner) quotes the basic plan at a 12-months subscription rate.

One minor update: I have a viable strategy to add to the list of options that might not need any funding. It does require a credit card /debit card/gift card, however. This is the option that I think is best overall; I'll be more than happy to discuss it on the IRC channel; I'll post updates here after I've had some time to settle into my new job.

Ouch. That explains why I couldn't use any moongates or EX-pet arenas lately, I thought it was a configuration error from my side.

    • So just a quick update here... I'm not really settled into my new job role, but had a few weekends to bring this back online. I'll try to address the other stuff and any bugs later. I may be able to do the same thing for moon gates/pet arenas, but we'll have to see. Once things have been tested out, I hope that someone can let all the other maintainers of forks of Elona know.

I ended up taking the option that I came up with last because it avoids the complexities of funding and the stupidities of US tax laws. It's online now; it is named elochat-proxy.shiroko.yi.org. To use the revived chat server, follow the instructions in the first post, substituting localhost with elochat-proxy.shiroko.yi.org. Instructions are reproduced below, with appropriate substitutions:

To specify a custom chat server (that handles network player character chat messages, wish messages, and death messages), edit your config.txt and set the serverList entry to 1:

      Default config.txt:

         serverList. "0" 0=auto retrieve 1=disable auto retrieve

To enable a custom chat server, change config.txt:

         serverList. "1" 0=auto retrieve 1=disable auto retrieve

Then, edit or create server.txt; its default contents are:

         noaneko.squares.net%elona.squares.net%

which is retrieved from this URL.

The original chat server is noaneko.squares.net, so if you have an alternate chat server running, you can change server.txt to this:

         elochat-proxy.shiroko.yi.org%elona.squares.net%

Given that I worked on EloBridge, which translated IRC sessions into EloChat, I'm actually quite keenly aware of that. It doesn't happen to be useful for this scenario.

I've patched the proxy to be a little more secure. The chat server is now online. Follow the instructions at #107 to try it out.

    • Is it currently online? I don't get it to work after editing config.txt and server.txt. I just get an error after loading a character. Also the default contents of server.txt are actually a bunch of stuff and not just "noaneko.squares.net%elona.squares.net%", and every time the game starts it overwrites whatever's in the file with the stuff again.

    • I managed to make it work. The problem was that I was editing the existing server.txt. If anyone else has problems, try DELETING server.txt, creating a new text file with the same name, then adding the server name. That makes it work for some reason.

The website contains modified exes and dlls to reenable chat/vote/moongate/pets arena on the stable versions of vanilla Elona (v1.16rfix2, xmas, v1.22), as well as simiarly modified files to enable some degree of network function for certain variant versions/mods of Elona (but conscipicously not Elona+, because Ano expkciitly asked them not to). To do so, just drag and copy the exes and dlls (remember to download the correct, matching version) into your Elona folder and run the modified exe.

Since they have to set up replacement servers similar to what Jdstroy has done, you techncially don't need to use any of the modified files to enable chat/vote for the three stable vanilla versions (but you need the modified files for the moongate/pets arena function, as the server lists for those are hardcoded in). In this case, however, you have to modify your config.txt  to disable auto-retrieval of server lists, and then replace the contents of your server.txt file to noaneko.squares.net%noaneko.squares.net% (basically, both the chat and vote servers are the same -- noaneko.squares.net, they revived the old chat domain with Noa's consent), taking care to make sure you save the file with ANSI encoding (not UTF-8, which your server.txt file may have been saved in if an error pops up during auto-retrieval of the server list).

Basically the method above is identical to Jdstroy's suggestions, except with different servers.

Or at least, this is how it is supposed to work. I can't get the modified exes to work since the auto-retrieval server for some reason decides to throw up an access denied error ("you don't have permission to access /file/server.txt). At least the erorr message isn't saved as UTF-8 this time.

I can sort of get the chat function to work using the second method (no connection error), but I can't see any messages at all. Vote doesn't work at all (same connection error issue. Interestingly, I've also have the exact same problems when trying to connect to servers set up by Jdstroy and ztjal's (for Chinese Elona). Maybe there's a blocked port somewhere or my country's IP is banned? I dunno, hope somebody could help here.

Hullo! Nobody has been IP banned on my server as of yet. If you can spare some time, I may be able to take a moment to help you, but I'll need more information in order to do so. For instance, what IP address are you connecting from when you play Elona? Around what time did you try to connect, in UTC? Do you have a packet capture (e.g. through Wireshark, or tcpdump) or a firewall log? All of these can be useful in diagnosing it. If you're not comfortable responding here, I'm usually on IRC and you can get me to guide you through diagnostics in real-time.

    • hello, im kinda new to elona+, started playing about a year ago and until now never cared for the multiplayer content, so i started searching as this is the only place I found. To my understanding there are no working servers as of now, right? Do you guys know of another servers or is the hole thing completely dead?
