Hermit crabs are a naturally armored enemy, ignoring 34%+2d8 damage. They are also incredibly slow, so most characters who can't penetrate their thick shell can simply walk around them. If the hermit crab can't hurt you, you may be able to use them as dummies for training your combat skills.
Hermit crabs occasionally carry the <Unknown Shell>, a useful amulet for starting adventurers, so taking the time to kill them can be quite worthwhile. Just because you have an <Unknown Shell> already doesn't mean you shouldn't kill more - they may drop another <Unknown Shell>, which will instantly turn into a random artifact-level amulet when you pick it up, so hermit crabs can be quite valuable.
Evolution
In Elona+, hermit crabs can be evolved into a Yadonashi using an <another heart>, gaining 20 strength, 30 dexterity, 10 speed, and a new sprite with black tint.
